Bachelor of Science in Internetworking and Security

The BSc in Internetworking and Security degree aims to provides a thorough and practical grounding in networking, network design, network administration and network management.

Given the increasing requirements for data and voice communications and global concerns about information security and cyber crime, students can expect to find stimulating and challenging employment with a wide range of employers. Past Murdoch graduates have found employment in the following areas.

  • Network consulting firms
  • Equipment manufacturers such as Cisco systems and Marconi
  • Educational Institutions including: Murdoch, Curtin, Notre Dame, UWA, University of Technology Sydney
  • Telecommunication providers and ISPs including: Telstra, NDC, IINet, Westnet.
  • Defence services
  • Government departments
  • Large and small corporate environments

The degree has been designed in consultation with individuals in the network, telecommunications and security industry and is constantly evolving and adapting to meet the needs of students and employers in this dynamic field.

Although the course aims to develop individuals with a broad understanding of the principles and theory behind internetworks and their security, we recognise that students need the hands-on experience with the type of equipment used within the industry if they are to are to successfully move from education to employment.

Having experience with equipment is one thing, proving it to a potential employer can be something else. Consequently, many of our units are aligned with the requirements of industry certifications. Students are encouraged to sit the relevant certification exams and in doing so prove to potential employers that they have the capacity to be immediately productive.

Certifications and professional exams which can be pursued in conjunction with this course include:

  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
  • Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)
  • Certified Wireless Network Administrator (CWNA)
  • Managing Cisco Network Security (MCNS)
  • Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced (CSPFA)
