Current and future prospects for students
The IT industry and particulary the communications and networking sector finds itself in an interesting position. Despite the spectacular demise of dot-com firms and their hype at the beginning of the millenium, the reality is that many of the promised technologies and services are being rolled out. Not a case of "build it and they will come" but because there is demand and given the rapid adoption of broadband there is also the means to deliver it.
While new technologies and services demand professionals to design, implement and maintain them, the supply of professionals has lagged. The widely publisised bankruptcies, layoffs and poor employment prospects during the "tech-wreck" saw many students avoid IT altogether. Several years later we are seeing the results; small numbers of graduates in a period of solid demand for IT skills. Normally great employment prospects and high starting salaries sees a strong demand for available University places. However, the current boom in the Western Australian resources sector has seen potential university entrants choose to accept well paying positions rather than study at TAFE or university.
Where does leave you? Well if you are a potential undergraduate student it means that the chance of getting into a university place are as good as they have ever been. Smaller class sizes mean the quality of your education is likely to be higher and the numbers in your graduating class, with whom you'll compete for employment will be low. Going into a sector that is already struggling to fill positions the prospects for skilled professionals the future looks positive.
If you are a potential postgradute student already in the workforce the current skills shortage makes it easier to position yourself in the type of employment you are really seeking.
